The ability to read and write is defined as literacy. Reading skills of a child play an important role in their success in school and work. For children, reading can be a fun-filled and imaginative activity which opens the door for the child to explore the world. Research on this topic shows that the early years involve the highest rates of learning, and the habits formed at a young age will stay with them for a lifetime. Reading at a Young Age improves communication skills among children.
Five early reading skills that are all essential are phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency. Researchers recommend rhymes and stories if a child has problems reading. This helps the child improve his/her language and reading skills.
Parents play an important role in helping their children to enjoy reading and developing ability to learn. Parents are recommended to encourage their child’s reading, but not to push them. Make reading a part of family life by turning off the tube and making reading a group activity for parents and children alike. Setting a good example is the best way to influence a child.
An important activity a parent can do to prepare a child for future academic success is by reading books to children. This habit develops bonding between the parent and the child and provides a shared family frame in the child’s mind. The purpose of the printed word is well understood by a child. Apart from building vocabulary, it also helps a young child learn the connection between the written and printed word. Reading to a child develops the child’s listening skill, taste in literature, and information absorption to a great extent. The most important thing you can do to help your child become a successful reader is communicate that reading is valuable and enjoyable.
